Eric Garcetti arrived in India on Tuesday to take over as the head of the US mission there, nearly two years after President Joe Biden nominated him as ambassador to India. "Hello, Eric Garcetti, Ambassador-Designate! Shortly after Garcetti's arrival, the US embassy tweeted, "We're happy to welcome you to Incredible India and work with you to establish even greater ties between our two great nations. Garcetti studied Hindi as well as Indian culture and history while at Columbia University. The former mayor of Los Angeles' appointment was postponed due to a court dispute that followed allegations that he had covered up sexual harassment claims made against an aide. In a bipartisan vote, Garcetti's appointment was finally approved.

20 months after his nomination, the Senate ultimately approved Garcetti's appointment in a vote that was supported by both parties last month. The newest mayor of Los Angeles, Garcetti, takes office as both sides struggle with the consequences of Russia's activities in Ukraine and just ahead of Vice President Biden's possible visit, which would be his first as president, at the G20 conference in September. While recent attention has been on Ukraine, collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region continues to be a primary priority for both nations, not least due to China's growing assertiveness. The Quad foreign ministers met for the first time on Indian territory the morning following the G20 foreign ministers' conference, demonstrating the significance India places on multilateral collaboration.
